Can your boss make you go back to work if you are looking after a child (or another dependant)?

You always have the right to take time off for dependants, when some emergency means that you have to be off work to look after a child or other person you have responsibility for. This leave is unpaid.

Under normal circumstances, you might only be entitled to be off for as long as it takes to find someone else to look after them – for example to arrange a nursery place or a sitter for a child.

However, in the current circumstances, when that is unlikely to be possible, caring for someone who has no one else to look after them in my opinion is a good enough reason to stay off work.
